Did you know that 80% of companies offer virtual internships as an option for students? Yeah, that's right!

Daniel Nivern, co-founder and CEO of Virtual Internships illustrates the benefits of a virtual internship program spot on in an interview with Forbes:

“There have always been a lot of restrictions on internships. You were restricted by your location, because internships often took place in the summer, and there were costs involved in moving or having to travel. In one swoop we reduce all of those barriers. A brilliant student in Vietnam can now get access to a company in Silicon Valley.”

The days of commuting across town for that unpaid coffee-fetching gig are taking a backseat. The future of work is remote and the growing popularity of remote internships is mirroring that trend.

If you're currently on the lookout for the right remote internship, you probably have more questions than answers. Where do you even start comparing? Who's got the best opportunities for you

We've sifted through the noise to bring you the golden possibilities. Let's dive into the best online/virtual internships, ensuring you find the perfect fit. Stick with us until the end – we've got some exclusive tips!

The great digital shift: Online internships on the rise

Here's a shocker: As it turns out, internships aren't just valuable for interns as part of their professional development plan. 80% of employers say these programs are the candidate sourcing technique that provides the highest ROI. It's profitable for virtual interns too – according to research, they get more than twice the number of job offers than students without such experience.

Modern technology and COVID-19 lockdowns gave virtual, global internships a huge boost.

Research shows that roughly 75% of graduates took part in some form of experiential learning. One-third participated in virtual recruiting. In many industries, that ratio is only going to grow.

Online internships rise

Why this monumental shift, you ask?

Well, world events, a need for cost efficiency, and the realization that "Hey, we don't need to be in the same room to get stuff done." have pushed the scales. With tools like Google Drive, ClickUp, and Notion, collaboration is as easy as sharing your latest TikTok dance move with the world.

According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau survey, the number of people working remotely has tripled over two years, reaching almost 18%. Over 27.6 million Americans have already adopted the WFH environment.

Why is this happening?

Companies have realized they can tap into talent pools from anywhere in the world. Plus, there's the undeniable fact that people tend to work better when they're in their comfort zone – like your cozy nook by the window or your favorite coffee shop.

Advantages of an online virtual internship program

Forget about traffic: Ever dreamt of working in your PJs, with a side of your favorite snacks? Online internships are making it happen. You get to manage your time, juggle school, and avoid that dreadful morning commute. With online internships, you can tailor and schedule your working hours around your routine.

Advantages of an online virtual program

You're also contributing to the greater good – more people who work remotely help to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads, which means that commuting times are shorter than they were all decade.

Be a part of the global network: Remember that friend from Switzerland you made while playing an MMORPG game? Now, replace that gamer pal with a professional mentor from, let's say, Paris or Tokyo. Talk about global exposure. If your dream is to work with a cool tech startup in Silicon Valley or a magazine in New York, there's no need to rack up flight miles anymore.

Choices, choices, and more choices: Feel like dipping your toes in graphic design this month and coding the next? There are no limits as to the type and number of projects you can enroll in with online/virtual internships. Maybe you'll discover a new passion that turns into a profitable career.

Why high schoolers should embrace project-based learning

Ever tried to level up in a game without going through missions? Not possible. It's the same with real-world job experiences. Without missions (projects) you're stuck in the same place.

Not only does it help you grow; project-based learning is hands-on, immersive, and darn satisfying. It's learning by doing, so it sure as hell isn't boring.

Discover the magic of project-based learning

  • Experience + Skills = Win: Want to create the next viral app? Or how about analyzing what makes a YouTube video trend? In online internships, you're handed real tasks and learn how to overcome roadblocks by trial and error. As an intern, you could be creating a marketing strategy for an actual product, designing a website, or even coding an app. It's practical, applicable, and kinda cool if we're being honest.
  • Bridging the gap: No, we don't mean vibing to early Black Eyed Peas tunes. Imagine a bridge, with high-school-you on one side and pro-level-you on the other. Each project you take on is a brick in building that bridge. It links your theoretical knowledge with practical work reality.

  2. Research, research, research: Look beyond the usual internship platforms. Dive deep into niche websites, forums, and Reddit threads related to your desired field. Read online publications, join related Facebook groups, or follow industry leaders on Twitter. An informed candidate always stands out. Plus, you might stumble across some unique opportunities.
  3. Make valuable connections: Don't be afraid to slide into DMs, attend virtual hangouts, and actively expand your network. Sometimes, it's about who you know, not just what you know. Join virtual webinars, online workshops, and Discord servers related to your area of interest. They're often buzzing with professionals who might be open to providing internship opportunities or at least guidance. Read Isha's story to see how a 10th grader got into business with a $200M company.
  4. Personalize your application: Avoid generic cover letters and copy and paste messages. Tailor your application for each role, showcasing how your skills align with their specific requirements. Find ways to prove to recruiters that you're the perfect fit.
  5. Dabble in micro-internships: Look for short-term, project-based opportunities. Websites like Parker Dewey offer micro-internships which can be an excellent way to build experience.
  6. Cold email with flair: Reach out to organizations that resonate with you, even if they haven't advertised internships. But remember: no spammy messages. Make your pitch personal and compelling. Here's an example of a good cold email.
  7. Use social media like a pro: TikTok and Instagram aren't just for fun. Use them to follow professionals or companies in your industry. Engage with their content. You never know when an Insta story might announce an internship opportunity.
  8. Seek feedback: Haven't managed to land an internship despite multiple tries? As for feedback on your applications from the companies you reached out to. Otherwise, you can also ask your mentors, teachers, or peers in online communities.
  9. Sign up for virtual volunteering: Many organizations are seeking virtual volunteers. It might not be an internship as such, but it can still offer invaluable experience. Participating in charitable work makes you appear selfless, caring, and hard-working – all attractive virtues, if you ask us.
  10. Create your own project: Can't find an internship that speaks to you? Start a mini-project (we've got more tips on that for you below). It could be a blog, a YouTube channel, or even a small online business. Demonstrating initiative can be just as valuable as formal experience. Plus, you never know if it won't take off and become your full-time job.
  11. Master online collaboration tools: Get familiar with platforms like Slack, Trello, and Zoom. Being proficient in these programs can give you a competitive edge, as many companies use these tools for remote work, so it will make onboarding easier – for you and them both.
  12. Don't forget to work on your soft skills: While technical skills are vital, soft skills like communication, adaptability, and teamwork are just as crucial in a remote setting. Highlight instances (with examples!) where you've demonstrated these at school or in other projects.
